The energy technology excursion took 25 students of the engineering master's degree program to Erfurt and the surrounding area accompanied by Franz Wittmann and Tim Herrmannsdörfer from LTTT. The excursion included three stops, which gave the students interesting insights into various areas of the energy sector.
The first stop was the Hohenwarte II pumped storage power plant, which is the largest hydropower plant on the Saale in Thuringia with an installed capacity of 320 MW. The students were given an informative presentation on the structure and operation of the power plant. They were then given a guided tour of the power plant and one of the neighboring dams.

The excursion next took the group to the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) in Arnstadt. During the tour of the institute, the students were given an insight into the various fields of research related to battery testing, stack development for alkaline and high-temperature electrolysis and measurement methods for post-mortem analysis of energy converters and storage systems.
On the second day, Stadtwerke Erfurt and its innovative gas and steam power plant were scheduled. During a comprehensive tour of the production facilities, the students were able to gain valuable insights into the infrastructure and operation of a large-scale heating network.
After the three informative plant visits, the group returned from the energy technology excursion with numerous new insights and findings. The students and supervisors would like to express their thanks for the hospitality, the interesting lectures and guided tours as well as the valuable insights gained at the Hohenwarte II pumped storage power plant, Fraunhofer IKTS and Stadtwerke Erfurt.
